In a dramatic about-turn, the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) today announced that it would be holding a public inquiry into the September Batu Buruk riot in Kuala Terengganu.

The rights body had earlier ruled out a public inquiry on grounds of legal restrictions.
The Sept 8 ceramah in Kuala Terengganu, organised by polls watchdog Bersih, turned unruly when the police stopped it on the grounds that the ceramah was unlawful.
Suhakam commissioner Muhammad Shafee Abdullah made the announcement today at the press conference held at Suhakam office in Kuala Lumpur.
Shafee would be heading the panel, which would also include Prof Khoo Kay Kim and Asiah Abu Samah.
Shafee said that the week-long inquiry would be conducted before the end of the year.
