KUALA TERENGGANU: The gathering by a coalition of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations calling itself Bersih in Batu Buruk last night did not materialise. The public adhered to police advice to stay away, leaving the proposed venue of the rally at the Batu Buruk recreational field vacant.

Jalan Sultan Mahmud was nearly devoid of traffic, except for police roadblocks at several places leading to the field.
On Sept 8, a gathering at the same venue turned into a riot which led to several people being injured, including four policemen.
Mohd Nor Ashaari, who stays in Persiaran Hakim, which is near the proposed venue of the gathering, said he was thankful that the rally had been called off.
“We saw what happened on Sept 8 and did not want to see a repeat of it.”
The businessman praised the police for maintaining law and order.
