Malaysia's election watchdog says polls are near

KUALA LUMPUR ( Nov 15, 2007): Malaysia’s elections watchdog believes a general election could take place any time after the next six weeks, state news agency Bernama said today.

“I can’t lie to you that I don’t know when the next general election will be held. I can’t tell you when, but I have given enough reminders to all to prepare for the polls,” Bernama quoted Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman as saying.
Abdul Rashid added that he believed the next election would be held shortly after the commission held a series of preparatory briefings for electoral officials nationwide, Bernama reported. The briefings would end within one and a half months, it added.
“As the EC (Election Commission) is making the preparations, political parties must also get their machinery ready,” Bernama quoted Abdul Rashid as telling reporters after addressing the first such briefing today in the southern town of Malacca. – Reuters
