SUARAM welcomes the announcement made by SUHAKAM on 14 November 2007, albeit only after much delay, that it will conduct a public inquiry into the use of violence and live ammunition by the police in the incident at Batu Buruk, Kuala Terengganu recently, which resulted in the shooting of two unarmed civilians by the police.
The September 8 ceramah at Kuala Terengganu, which was organised by polls watchdog BERSIH, was stopped by the police on the grounds that the ceramah was unlawful. Two men, Suwandi Abdul Ghani, 37, and Muhamad Azman Aziz, 21, sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and neck respectively.
Although this decision comes in late and only after protests and pressure given by the public and civil society, it is nevertheless important that the Commission has decided to hold the inquiry to investigate the gross violations of human rights, and also to identify the violators in the incident.
Therefore, SUARAM urges members of the public who witnessed the incident and persons who may be able provide information and/or documents and other evidence on the incident, to come forward to assist in the inquiry. Those with information/documentation/evidences of the incident should contact SUHAKAM or SUARAM as soon as possible.
