Urgent appeal updates: 9 December 2007

More arrests in government’s all-out assault on freedom of assembly

After the arrests of 9 during the Human Rights March this morning, more were arrested in relation to “illegal assembly”.
10 of those who were released under police bail in the BERSIH rally arrests on 10 November, comprising mostly volunteer marshals (Unit Amal), have been arrested by the police last night and this morning, and will be charged tomorrow (10 December 2007).
Two others, namely Mohd Asri Ahmad and Mohd Harif Fathilah, have also been arrested and sent to the Dang Wangi police station. Mohd Asri was one of those who were injured by the police during the BERSIH rally. He had lodged a report on the assault by the police.
Mohd Sabu of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) was arrested in Ipoh during his daughter’s wedding this afternoon in relation to the BERSIH rally on 10 November. At approximately 5.15pm today, Tian Chua of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), who had just finished giving a talk at the SUARAM Johor Bahru branch office, was arrested by officers from Kuala Lumpur Serious Crimes Division under Section 27 Police Act for illegal assembly.
Earlier, the two victims who were shot at by the police during the BERSIH-organised ceramah (public forum), Suwandi Abd Ghani and Muhamad Azman Aziz, were arrested. They are reported to have been charged and denied bail. (We will update on the details of the charges once more information are obtained.)
We urge you to continue to register your strongest protest to the Malaysian Prime Minister and the Inspector General of Police for this assault on the right of the people to freedom of assembly to hold on to its power.
