KOTA BAHARU, Jan 12 (Bernama) –– The use of indelible ink during the coming general election must be gazetted so that it will not be challenged by voters.
Malaysians For Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) chairman Abdul Malek Hussin said the use of indelible ink could be challenged as the Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981 had yet to be amended.
He said the amendment had yet to be made although the Election Commission (EC) had agreed to use the indelible ink on voters.
“Voters can refuse the use of indelible ink and challenge it in court as it is not stated in the regulations,” he told Bernama here today.
Malek said Article 19(3) of the Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981 must be amended quickly so that the use of indelible ink during the coming general election would not lead to problems.
Mafrel is an independent body recognised by EC to monitor the election process.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman had said indelible ink would be applied on voters’ fingers to prevent fraud at the general election.
It would also be introducing transparent ballot boxes to replace the old black boxes.
