Twenty-two of the 23 people detained during a candlelight vigil in front of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) last night were freed on police bail this morning.
The group, who were released at 7am, has been asked to report back to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters on Nov 24.
The detainee who is still in police custody is being investigated for other cases. It is unsure if he would be remanded or charged.
The vigil was held to protest the use of the Internal Security Act and to commemorate the first anniversary of the Nov 10 Bersih rally.
When Malaysiakini visited the police headquarters at 7.30am, several of those who were freed were seen waiting for friends and relatives to pick them up. Some also lodged police reports on the incident for various reasons.
Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lau Weng San, who was among the 23 freed this morning, said he was sad with the police’s action last night.

“I feel very sad that the police can beat up elected representatives right in front of the public. Our privilege as elected representatives has been taken away by the police.
“The police gave no warning before taking action. They didn’t use a loud hailer. They didn’t identify themselves either during the arrests,” he said.
Punched twice’
Lau and Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua were allegedly manhandled by the police when they were arrested. This morning, Lau sported injuries to his right cheek.
The DAP assemblyperson said he had lodged a police report for allegedly being punched twice by two plainclothes policemen.
In his report, Lau also complained that he lost his motorcycle helmet worth RM50 and a pair of spectacles worth RM300 as a result of the melee.
Another person who was freed this morning also expressed disappointment with the police. “I was only trying to help YB Lau but they decided to arrest me as well,” said Mohd Fasya, 27.
All the detainees were held at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters carpark as they waited for their statements to be recorded.
About 10 lawyers from the Selangor Bar Council led by its chairperson Rajpal Singh arrived at the police headquarters and advised the detainees before they had their statements recorded.
A small group of family members, friends and supporters of those detained gathered outside the police headquarters until about 4am as they waited for the release of the detainees.
Among those detained were Malaysiakini videographer Syukri Mohamad, Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu, MBPJ counsellor Tiew Fei Chin and Penang-based activist BK Ong.
