SUNGAI PETANI, April 1 – Three independent candidates contesting in the Bukit Selambau state by-election have denied that they are financed by the Barisan Nasional (BN).
L. Sarala, Maj (Rtd) Anuar Abdul Hamid and Mohd Radhi Mat Lazim dismissed an allegation by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) supreme council member N. Gobalakrishnan yesterday that all the 13 independent candidates in the by-election were backed by the BN.
“The allegation is baseless and I challenge him (Gobalakrishnan) to furnish proof,” she told reporters here today.
Sarala said she had used her own money and had not sought donations from any party, and gave Gobalakrishnan 24 hours to extend an open apology through the media to clear the names of the independent candidates.
“We independent candidates are sincere in wanting to serve the people. PKR should emulate the BN which does not make slanderous statements in its campaign,” she said.
Sarala said PKR had to issue such a statement because it had failed to make any contribution to the state of Kedah.
Anuar said the allegation was utter rubbish because all the independent candidates used their own money in their campaigns in the by-election.
He said he might be the former head of the Merbok Umno Division but that did not mean that the BN was financing his campaign.
Radzi said Gobalakrishnan’s allegation was illogical.
“I am not financed by anyone. I am financing my own campaign without assistance from anyone,” he said. – Bernama
