KOTA BARU, Oct 1 – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will expel its Telok Kemang division committee member Shahruddin Abdul Hamid from the party if he contests as an independent candidate in the Bagan Pinang state seat by-election on Oct 11.
The party’s elections director Saifudin Nasution Ismail, however, said they would reconsider Shahruddin’s membership status if found on nomination day (Oct 3) that he really would be contesting in the by-election.
“PKR has certain principles and if contesting the seat means breaching party discipline, action will be taken against the perpetrator,” he said in response to Shahruddin’s announcement yesterday that he would go ahead with his plan to contest in the by-election as an independent candidate.
Shahruddin, 52, said his aim of contesting the seat was to pursue his vision of comprehensive development for Port Dickson as aspired by residents in the area.
He was also reported to be willing to quit his post in the Telok Kemang division and leave the party if that was what the voters in the area wanted.
Saifudin said PKR had made a stand to support the PAS candidate representing Pakatan Rakyat in the by-election. – Bernama
