KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — MIC vice president Datuk Devamany S. Krishnasamy said that that party will not “compromise” on the Hulu Selangor seat which it considers to its consitituency.
He also believes the Prime Minister will make the right decision in the regard.
He said that the MIC must contest in Hulu Selangor for the “spirit of Barisan Nasional”.
“This has been an MIC seat and that we cannot compromise because in the spirit of Barisan Nasional, that has been the heartbeat. The 52 years we have been together since Merdeka, the consensus and working together has made us become 1 Malaysia,” he said.
Devamany said that party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has informed Datuk Seri Najib Razak of MIC’s candidate.
“The president has made his announcements and recommendations. We hope that the Prime Minister as the chairman of Barisan Nasional, and who has the jurisdiction and power to decide, will give his endorsement in the interest of BN and also MIC.
“We hope and pray that things will come out well and we are hoping that he will give a good answer,” he said.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its MP Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad last Thursday.
Umno and MIC are locked in a tussle to field their candidates in the coming Hulu Selangor by-election, with both former mentri besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib and Datuk G. Palanivel being touted as possible runners.
However Devamany dismissed the tussle and stressed that both parties can work together.
“We will have to explain to our Umno brothers and sisters that the intention is good and we will work together as a family,” he said.
Devamany said his party machinery was ready for the by-election.
“We are already making preparations on the ground. Our machinery and president has move down on the ground very aggressively. Barisan Nasional is also already ready and moving down to the ground,” he said.
