HULU SELANGOR, 14 APRIL, 2010: A businessman, Johan Mohd Diah, 31, today offered himself as an independent candidate in the by-election for the Hulu Selangor Parliamentary seat on April 25.
He is the second candidate who had offered to stand as an independent after former Hulu Selangor MIC division deputy head V.S. Chandran announced his candidacy.
“I am a Felda settler and a voter here. I have taken the form to contest as an independent candidate at the request of the public to champion the cause of 1,000 Felda settlers at the Felda Sungai Tenggi and Gugusan Felda Hulu Selangor which has 6,000 voters.
“There are many people of caliber here…why should we elect a candidate from outside like the PKR candidate from Kelantan,” said the settler from the Sungai Tenggi Felda scheme and representing about 20,000 young voters in Hulu Selangor.
The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad, on March 25 due to cancer of the brain.
Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim had been selected as the PKR candidate while Barisan Nasional (BN) is expected to announce its candidate tomorrow.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to announce the BN candidate at 4pm tomorrow.
Nomination day is on Saturday.
