Political Parties Rushing To Register New Voters

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 13 (Bernama) — Some 56 per cent or 169,850 of 301,653 new voters registered during the first six months of this year were registered through political parties, the Election Commission (EC) said.
The EC’s voter registration panel chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Mat Said said of the total, DAP made the highest number of registrations at 55,321, followed by Umno at 54,872.
PAS and Parti Keadilan Rakyat registered 38,618 and 13,098 voters respectively, he said.
He said assistant registrars from political parties were paid RM1 for each registration.
Zainal Abidin said the EC’s outreach programme registered 72,434 new voters and processed 24,663 applications to change electoral address.
He said counters opened at Pos Malaysia registered 37,142 new voters and processed 11,903 applications to change address.
Johor recorded the highest number of new voters at 56,663, followed by Selangor (46,764) and Penang (36,841), he said.
