BERSIH 2.0 is pleased to announce that Dato’ Dr Toh Kin Woon has been re-selected into the Steering Committee, to assume the post of Northern Peninsula Vice-chairperson.
Dr Toh’s nomination was endorsed by *Aliran*, SUARAM Penang, Malaysia Youth and Students Democratic Movement (Dema), Penang Independent Schools and Education Society, USM Tionghua Association Alumni, Ikram Penang, Mama Bersih Penang and KAMU Penang on 27 January 2014.
Dr Toh is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Penang Institute, which was previously known as the Socio-Economic and Environmental Research Institute (SERI), of which he was Chairperson (1997-2008).
He was a three-term elected member of the State Legislative Assembly and a State Minister (1995-2008) in Penang as well as a Senator in Parliament (1993-1995).
Prior to his entry into politics, he was attached to the National University of Malaysia where he taught and did research in the fields of Economics and Political Economy (1973-1993). During his tenure as an academic, Dr Toh also acted as a consultant to the Food and Agriculture Organization; ESCAP, Bangkok; ILO-ARTEP, New Delhi; ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta; Institute of Developing Economies, Tokyo; the World Development Institute, Helsinki and the World Bank. He was a Visiting Fellow to the University of Sydney, Australia, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore, University of the Philippines, Diliman and the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto, Japan.
He obtained his B.Econs and PhD degrees from the University of Malaya and his MA from the University of Leeds, England.
