Bersih 2.0’s Yellow Mania

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH 2.0) in cooperation with the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, ushers in the new year with an exciting and fun-filled week long event dubbed the ‘Yellow Mania’, happening from the 6th to 10th January 2016 at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Jalan Maharajalela, Kuala Lumpur.

Centered around a photography exhibition of the recent Bersih 4 peaceful assembly, we will also be showcasing a number of forums, a screening, children’s activities and an acoustic gig.

On the first night, a forum entitled ‘Negara Dunia ke-3 Boleh Berubah Melalui Pilihanraya’ will see a panel consisting of Bersih 2.0 Vice-Chair Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari, academician Dr Maszlee Malik and ex-ISA detainee Abdul Malek Hussain and moderated by none other than our own Fadiah Nadwa Fikri disproving some assumptions that 3rd world nations can’t change via elections.

On Thursday, we have another panel comprising of Bersih 2.0 Chairperson Maria Abdullah, together with Mugiyanto, an Indonesian activist once abducted by the Soeharto regime during Reformasi, to discuss the topic ‘People’s Movement Can Bring Change’. The Session will be moderated by Dr Wong Chin Huat.

Friday night will set a different tone with Patrick Teoh, emceeing a night of stand-up comedy, with comics Harekeshwaran, Dibjualkata, Shahid, Sim Tong, Indonesian comic Newendi and Hishamuddin Rais promising scores of laughter at the expense of Malaysian politicians.

Saturday evening will start early with the launching of our own Bersih Bootcamp, an activist training ground scheduled across the nation starting this year, and capped off later in the evening with the screening of ‘The Lady’, starring Datuk Michelle Yeoh as the Burmese icon Aung San Suu Kyi. The screening will be followed by a short discussion with Debbie Stothard and Hishamuddin Rais, moderated by Rama Ramanathan.

Sunday 10th January will start at noon with a colouring contest for children aged 5-12 years old, brought to you by Kumpulan Kartunis Independen, helmed by Zunar, and featuring Yaya The Clown with the theme ‘Malaysia Milik Kita Bersama’. The festivities of Sunday continues after-dark with the Yell-O Sound Gig, featuring talents of Sons of the Soils, Panklima Jalanan, Iltizam Iman, Dum Dum Tak, Orpheus, Pyanhabib, Rahmat Haron, Mellisa Heidi, Balakong’s Brigade and emceed by Adam Adli.

We hope that everyone will join us in ushering in the new year, celebrating democracy and rekindling our memories of Bersih 4.

See you there!
