Malaysia Then & Now

“Sometimes, it’s like loving someone who doesn’t love you back.” – Orked describing Malaysia, in Yasmin Ahmad’s ‘Gubra’ (2006).
For many Malaysians overseas, emigrating has come at a great price. They fight a huge emotional and spiritual battle as they try to fit into a new and alien society. Many long for the days when race didn’t matter, and Malaysia’s future was not skewered by political or racial ideologies.
We need actions to be taken now to institute all the right elements for our desired future. From the brain drain, political corruption to our education system, Malaysia needs visionary leaders to rebuild our beloved country.

“Only when elections are clean and fair, can citizens be real masters of their own destiny.”

Do your part in bringing about electoral reform in Malaysia

By April 2018, Malaysia will hold its 14th General Elections (GE14). In GE13, there was a record voter turnout of 84.4%, for many it was their first time. However the reality is, our general elections are neither free nor fair.
The Coalition of Clean and Fair Elections (BERSIH 2.0) has produced evidence that the ruling government has manipulated the electoral process which included gerrymandering, phantom voters, a biased media and postal vote fraud. The2014 Bersih People’s Tribunal delivered its verdict that GE13 was indeed marred by irregularities.
One way to overcome this disadvantage for GE14 is to have even higher turnout of voters. That’s where overseas Malaysians, like yourself, can play an active role.
Today, Global Bersih’s activities are carried out by volunteers with a part-time Administration Coordinator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. To broaden our services and prepare for GE14, we need your help to to build additional capacity.
Please contribute to Global Bersih and help us expand our Secretariat capacity with appropriate staff, so we can continue to administer our activities, run the overseas voting process campaign, overseas voter training, city outreach activities and international advocacy with efficiency and professionalism.

Who is Global Bersih?

Global Bersih (GB) is a movement by overseas Malaysians to lend support to Bersih 2.0‘s mission to bring about clean and fair elections in Malaysia. GB made its impact when it first organised rallies in 38 international locations with 4003 overseas Malaysians in solidarity and in conjunction with the Bersih 2.0 rally in 2007. At the Bersih 4 rally in 2015, there were over 90 international locations with 18,000 overseas Malaysians rallying around the world.

What we do

Advocate for electoral and institutional reforms. We facilitate the use of UN and other international mechanisms and lobby the international community to create political pressure on the government of Malaysia to do right.
Keep Malaysians living abroad informed and connected to Malaysia, so that every Malaysian living abroad can be properly informed when it is time to cast their vote.
Provide training to overseas Malaysians on how to go about registering to vote, on the overseas voting process and procedures, to understand their electoral rights and on the advocacy side, how to organise international action in support of human rights defenders facing arrests and intimidation back home.

Why Geneva?

GB is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Geneva, Switzerland. Geneva was chosen because of the presence of the UN European HQ and more specifically, the Officer of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The city is also recognised as the international centre of human rights as it encourages and supports the presence of NGOs.
As all major players and international forums are held in Geneva, it makes it convenient for Global Bersih to carry out its international advocacy work on behalf of Bersih 2.0.
As Global Bersih is registered in Switzerland, all donations will be converted into Swiss Francs.
