PRESS STATEMENT BY MARIA CHIN ABDULLAH (9 JANUARY 2017): PM NAJIB RAZAK MUST WALK THE TALK

In light of Najib Razak’s statement on not taking what rightly belongs to the rakyat, let me remind the prime minister that actions speak louder than words.
Najib should lead by example by first explaining the RM2.6 billion “donation” and RM42 million from SRC International found in his personal accounts and what he did with the money. His statement reeks of irony and hypocrisy considering that the 1MDB elephant in the room remains unaddressed.
It is completely irresponsible for Najib to speak of protecting what belongs to the rakyat when he has stolen from the people with no accountability in his dealings whatsoever.
When his government restricts our constitutional right to assemble and associate freely and our freedom of expression by obstructing rallies and harassing supporters; arbitrarily arresting civil society leaders, politicians, and artists; arbitrarily banning people from leaving the country; then Najib’s words hold no weight and credibility.
There are many instances of wastage in the administration that go unresolved and unanswered. Malaysians are disappointed and continue to be disappointed by Najib’s stubborn refusal to take responsibility, while ministers live the high life at the expense of the people burdened by rising costs of living and a slumping economy.
Najib needs to get off his high horse and answer for the billions found in his personal accounts first before preaching to others.
