The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) calls on the public to donate generously to #MakanKongsi, a humanitarian initiative to provide two meals a day to the most vulnerable communities in Malaysia throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO) period. The closure of most businesses and restrictions on movement in an effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus meant that daily wage earners would have no income for the whole 4-week of the MCO. For many, that may mean hunger and starvation.
Since the launch of #MakanKongsi on 20th March, Bersih 2.0 and our partner ENGAGE have raised RM137,000 and is currently committed to feeding 1,124 people till the end of the MCO. With the extension of the MCO till the 14th of April, we believe the situation will worsen for many and as such we hope to provide meals for up to 2,000 people in the coming days and we need a total of RM300,000 for that. We are still short of RM163,000.
#MakanKongsi is designed to be fully MCO-compliant and as such is not be affected by the recent restriction placed by the National Security Council (NSC) on NGOs providing much-needed food to the homeless and needy. To avoid the need for the vulnerable to gather at a pre-determined place and time to collect their meals, we give them food vouchers that can be exchanged for meals at participating restaurants or food stalls near their locality. We will then pay restaurants the next day based on the vouchers they received back. In this way, our recipients can come at any time during the day to collect their meals twice a day on a takeaway basis. Vouchers are date and meals-specified.
For those families or communities who are able to cook their own meals, #MakanKongsi allocates a sum of money through NGOs or individuals who are in direct contact with the people in need. Due diligence will be carried out in identifying and partnering with trustworthy NGOs/individuals and for all disbursement to be accounted for. The money allocated to recipients in this manner should be sufficient for them to buy provisions to cook their meals for the duration of the MCO.
Bersih 2.0 has taken up this project because no one should go hungry even as we fight the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic with the MCO. While the Prihatin Package announced by the PM three days ago to help citizens in the B40 category is most welcomed, it does not reach many who are not registered in the system. We call on all Malaysians to look out for these vulnerable people in our midst and to support all civil society efforts to help them tide over this crisis.
