Joint Statement by Bersih 2.0 and ENGAGE (15 April 2020): #MakanKongsi Aims to Raise another RM100,000 to Face Phase 3 of MCO

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) and our partner ENGAGE, are pleased to announce that as of today, we had raised RM363,067 for the #MakanKongsi initiative to help vulnerable communities during the first and second phase of the Movement Restriction Order(MCO). We are extremely grateful and would like to express our sincere gratitude to the 1,214 donors who have been very generous to help ease the burdens of those who are less fortunate during the MCO period.

#MakanKongsi’s focus is to ensure that the vulnerable communities would get two meals a day during the MCO period and the donations that we received had benefitted almost 6,000 people from these communities. Through 26 NGO partners and individuals, we had provided food vouchers, cash aid, and essential provisions to individuals, families and villages that are at high risk of starvation. These partner NGOs serves the urban poor, Orang Asli/Asal, migrant workers, refugees, single mothers, OKU and other vulnerable groups. For more information, please go to

Following the extension of MCO to phase 3 as announced by the government on 10 April 2020, we expect more people will be affected by a lack of income to support themselves and their families for the remaining 2 weeks until 28 April 2020. Many of these same communities would still be at risk as many of them are daily wage earners who depend on small-medium enterprises (SMEs) for work. Starvation is a reality for them as they will not have any income until the MCO is lifted.

In view of this, Bersih 2.0 and ENGAGE through the #MakanKongsi initiative would like to raise another RM100,000 to ensure that our goal of providing meals twice a day for the vulnerable communities could be continued during the third phase of the MCO. We will continue to work with credible NGO partners and individuals who are very committed to make sure that no one goes hungry during this period. Every cent that you donate to us will be utilised to provide meals for these communities and none will be utilised to cover administrative or logistical costs. With the addition of RM100,000, our new target is to raise RM460,000, up from the previous target of RM300,000.

Once again, we wish to thank all who donated to #MakanKongsi. You have made a huge difference in the thousand of lives we were able to reach. We are indeed #StrongerTogether in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. We will succeed and we will succeed together.
