Press Release of BERSIH 2.0 International Bureau (B2IB): Myanmar’s Democracy Must Be Defended And Not Crushed By The Military

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) strongly condemns the Tatmadaw (military) take-over of the newly elected civilian government of Myanmar, a day before the Parliament is due to be convened. This is an utter disregard of the will of the people and undermines the democratic norms and space processes built since 2015.

Bersih 2.0 advocates for free and fair elections as the basis to form a legitimate government. Myanmar’s election in November 2020 was a clear indication of the people’s choice with the National League for Democracy (NLD) winning with a landslide majority. We take note of Tatmadaw’s allegations of electoral disparity or fraud, however, evidence has not been forthcoming and this has not been adjudicated through the proper forum within the system.

Bersih 2.0 views with concern the backsliding of Myanmar’s path to democracy and the violation of human rights that is happening now with this military coup.

Bersih 2.0  calls for the immediate release of all detained politicians and activists. The state of emergency must be lifted and the civilian government be allowed to operate. The harassment of media must cease, and free flow of communication and information during this critical time must be allowed. We also call for the international community and ASEAN countries to step forward in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.
