Bersih needs funds for state election activities

PETALING JAYA: Electoral reform group Bersih is appealing for RM60,000 from the public to fund its activities for the upcoming elections in six states.

The funds are needed for electoral mentoring activities, including mobilising and training 89 election observers to monitor election offences and hate speech in 61 hot seats.

The group also plans to update its election monitoring website, www.pemantau.org, to receive complaints on election offences and related matters.

The funds will also be used to set up a call centre which would receive enquiries regarding voter registration, postal voting, polling centres, and related issues, it said in a statement.

Bersih also intends to launch #VoteLokal, a public campaign to increase voter turnout for the elections and encourage out-of-state voters to return and vote in their respective state constituencies.

“A high voter turnout is critical for democracy and to add legitimacy to the election results and the new state governments,” it said.

It gave an assurance that every ringgit donated will be accounted for and that it would share a report with the public after the state elections were over.

Those who wish to donate may do so to Bersih & Adil Network Bhd at Maybank account number: 512295102931.

Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor will go to the polls on Aug 12. Nominations will take place on July 29, and early voting on Aug 8.
